Financial Stress, Pain, and Your Health

stress and painResearch shows that financial stress can, and often does, lead to health problems. People with monetary worries have an increased risk of suffering from heart attacks, back pain, ulcers and migraines, among other ailments. While this news is by no means surprising, the true toll that this can take on your health can be.

Those who stressed over debt were twice as likely to have heart attacks as those who did not have this concern. Furthermore, polling revealed that twenty-seven percent of people with high financial stress reported ulcers or digestive problems, but only eight percent of people without financial worries reported these conditions. These results were mirrored in those who suffered from migraines, back pain, and muscle tension.

There was, however, an upside to this study: people who take steps to gain control of their finances can decrease their stress and thereby their risk for the conditions associated with it.

Migraine Pain And “Brainfreeze”

migraine-AtlantaMost of us have experienced the shock and subsequent pain of “brain freeze” at one time or another, but did you know that this type of pain might offer clues into more serious kinds of headaches, like migraines? A group of researchers in the United States recently induced brain freezes in a group of adults to study the responses triggered. They found that as the cold sensation was experienced in the brain, blood flow to the area increased. If you are suffering from migraines, Pain Management Atlanta can help!

This increase in blood flow is likely the cause of the pain associated with brain freezes. Scientists speculate that this response occurs because the brain is a closed system that is very sensitive to temperature changes, and changes in blood flow are a way to regulate temperature. A similar response is seen at the start of migraines, so if these findings are confirmed by further studies, new migraine treatments may focus on controlling blood flow in the brain.

Exercise Injuries

exercise injuriesIt is a widely known and well-researched fact that exercise is an important part of any healthy lifestyle. However, if done improperly, exercise can actually do more damage than good. For example, a high impact exercise like jogging can put unnecessary stress on your joints, or aggravate old injuries. If you experience joint pain after beginning a high impact exercise routine, consider switching to low impact options like swimming. At Pain Management Atlanta, we can help you with any exercise injuries you might have!

Weight lifting can also cause a significant amount of damage if not performed correctly. The two causes of most weight lifting injuries are poor posture, and using weights that are too heavy. Bad weight lifting habits can cause injuries to the spinal disks, joints, and muscles.

A final risk of exercise is the toll it can take on your heart. Exercising too frequently can cause subtle, but lasting, damage to the heart. Overall, exercise is a beneficial and important addition for everyone. Just make sure to add it after talking to a physician to ensure you are avoiding potential risks.

Healthcare Providers Focusing More on Quality of Life

healthcare providersThings are changing in how medical professionals are delivering care.

Traditionally medical providers focused on decreasing mortality rates by focusing on controlling problems that would lead to death in patients with chronic illnesses.

However more doctors are also beginning to look into how patients are affected in their quality of life by their health.

Doctors are starting to ask patients how they feel from day to day so that they can find treatments that will help the patient to improve their daily lives and routines

Doctors are asking questions like “Is your health condition affecting your life from day to day?” and “Is it hard to do your daily routine with your health problems?”

These sort of questions are important for health care providers to help patients who suffer from chronic pain.

In the edition of Population Health Management that was released in February, a study linked over all well-being with less trips to the emergency room and patients requiring less hospitalizations.

Pain Management and Botox

pain managementTen years ago, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Botox for the treatment of wrinkles, but how does Botox work to alleviate pain? Is it even possible?

Simply put, Botox forces your muscles to relax, and because of this property it has been used to treat chronic migraines, arthritis, back pain, and nerve pain. As with any treatment, Botox can cause adverse reactions. These range from mild bruising at the injection site, muscle weakness, nausea, and indigestion, to more serious issues like difficulty swallowing and breathing, which occur when the Botox spreads beyond the injection site into other areas of the body.

If you’re ready to try Botox for pain relief, consider the following recommendation from The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery: go to a pain specialist rather than your local plastic surgeon and ask them if it is the right choice for you. Higher dosages of Botox are used to treat pain than are used in cosmetic surgery, and it may not be right for you.
